More About This Experience

With the same team of professional climbers and rangers who bring you our popular 'Summiting Merapi Tour', you now have the opportunity to hike with us Merapi's sister volcano, Mount Merbabu. While Merapi certainly has a rich appeal among hiking enthusiasts, Merbabu offers a distinct experience unlike anything offered by other mountains in Java. Its uniqueness comes in the form of its changing landscape as you ascend up the mountain - from dense jungle foliage to its characteristic slopes blanketed by lush savannah landscapes, the mountain has much to offer in the way of natural beauty. In our opinion, Merbabu is certainly more charismatic than Merapi, its more uncompromising & calloused counterpart. It is true that the hike up to the summit of Merbabu is gradual and gentle and takes on average 5 - 6 hours to reach the summit (faster hikers have done it in 4 hours). Once on the summit, the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes is breathtaking and the sight of Mount Merapi right next door is as imposing and captivating as it is striking! This tour is designed together with local rangers and guides that have worked in the mountain since they were little boys. Summiting the mountain on an average of 1 -2 times a week, the guides we work with, under the supervision of veteran climber and ranger Mr Suroto, are well trained, experienced and know the mountain very well! Itinerary (for transport option) 2100 - 2300: Transfer from hotel in Jogja to New Selo basecamp 2300 - 2400: Check all equipment and logistics 0100 - 0500: Ascend up to the summit for sunrise 0530 - 0900: Descend down to Selo 0900 - 0945: Breakfast 0945 - 1115: Transfer from basecamp back to hotel in Jogja

Additional Information:

  • Transport is not included in the price, if you are not making your own way to the base camp, we can arrange a pickup and drop off service. Simply select the option from the add on section below
  • If you arrange your own transport to the base camp, we will send you all the necessary pick-up location information instantly after booking to your email. Our guide will then pick you up at this desig
  • Guests are advised not to ride a motorbike to the basecamp due to safety concerns since we expect that on the next day's return trip to Yogyakarta you will be exhausted and sleep deprived
  • Ensure that you are well prepared for the hike. Rain jackets, warm clothes, proper closed hiking shoes, water, energy bars are highly recommended
  • The trek is categorized as 'Medium Difficulty', thus all guests are advised to ensure physical fitness before signing up for the tour
  • Merbabu overnight camping trips can also be arranged, you can simply send us an inquiry to learn more

Our guide was fantastic and helped us achieve what we set out to. We had rain and a lot of cloud - but the vi... Read more
