More About This Experience

The Ramayana Ballet in Yogyakarta tells the love story of Rama and Sita - but their love story is unlike any other. It begins when Sita's father holds a competition where the winner can take his daughter's hand in marriage. Rama comes out victorious, however, the newly weds are exiled into the forest by Sita's mother. While in the forest, the evil king Rahwana kidnaps Sita and in order to save her Rama is assisted by the monkey god named Hanuman. A battle ensues to save Sita, but can she be saved? Witness it with your own eyes how this love story ends in the visualization of this Hindu epic in a combination of classical traditional dance and theatre. Ramayana ballet is held in Prambanan temple where the Ramayana story is engraved in the bas relief of the temple. The Ramayana Ballet in Jogja consists of four episodes: The Lost of Sita, Hanuman the Messenger, The Death of Kumbakarna, and The Holy Fire of Sita. Ramayana ballet Yogyakarta will bring you a magical night that you won't forget. You're going to watch a beautiful story told by a hundred dancers in an elaborate theatrical performance that will surely leave you in awe! A brilliant visual and theatrical experience with a javanese twist where the movements are accompanied by the traditional Gamelan orchestra. Important to note: From May to October, the Ramayana ballet takes place in an open-air theater with the magnificent Prambanan temple as the backdrop. Not to worry if you happen to come to Yogyakarta during the rainy season, the Ramayana ballet still plays in an indoor theater near the Prambanan temple.

The backdrop of Prambenan temple at night is spectacular. We enjoyed the story of Ramayana. It was made better because we'd been told the story when we visited the temple earlier in the day and had seen it portrayed in the carvings. The costumes were great and the dancers seemed excited. We were in ... Read more

This was a very good performance against the backdrop of Prambanan Temple. It was helped by the story being shown in English on screens - helped to understand what was happening.
