Making batik is an intricate process that takes a lot of time and patience! It is the complex method of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them (having first applied wax to the parts to be left undyed). In October 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and we understand why! Batik is a big part of Indonesian culture. Each island, city or even family has its own batik pattern. It used to be the case that a person's rank could actually be determined by the pattern of batik that he or she wore. There are some designs that were reserved for royalties and were officially banned to be worn by commoners.
