Making batik is an intricate process that takes a lot of time and patience! It is the complex method of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them (having first applied wax to the parts to be left undyed). In October 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and we understand why!
Batik is a big part of the Indonesian culture. Each island, city or even family has their own batik pattern. It used to be the case that a person's rank could actually be determined by the pattern of batik that he or she wore! There are some designs that were reserved for royalties and were officially banned to be worn by commoners.
Throughout Yogyakarta you see Batik patterns everywhere! Be careful though, most of the clothes and cloths being sold are not made the traditional ?batik? way. It is sometimes very difficult to see whether something is an ?original? batik or not. Although, if it seems too good (read;cheap) to be true it usually is!
Rather then just buying batik we believe it will be much more valuable to actually make your own Batik design! Mr.Widodo will teach you every single step and guide you through the entire process. You will be sure to take a nice artwork home with you.
You can create your own design, and you can make each size that he provides:
If the weather is cold/wet it might take longer (more than a day) for the fabric to dry, especially if you choose a big size! Therefore we suggest to choose a small size. Also it is quite an extensive process and the bigger the size the longer you will take to complete it. Although if you are in Yogyakarta for a bit longer, of course, feel free to go for a big one!
Whatever size you decide to make, Mr. Widodo will make sure you go home with a Batik fabric that you can be proud to call your own!
