More About This Experience
For decades, the silver trade-in Yogyakarta has centered around Kotagede area, the ancient capital of the Mataram Kingdom founded in 1582. Silver was initially crafted upon the order of the royal houses, however, Kotagede flourished as an enclave for silversmiths when the wife of the then dutch governor to Indonesia Mary Agnes introduced and trained skilled silversmiths in Jogja to produce the finest export quality silverware and jewelry. Since that time in the 1930s, silver production has been a mainstay for many who live in Kotagede. Mr. Sumedi, our host is a member of one such family that has been in the trade for generations.
In this Backstreet's workshop, you will get a rare opportunity to craft your own jewelry. We encourage you to bring your own design/pattern or shape and form for the jewelry you wish to create. Your hosts will then help you through the entire process - from flat metal sheet to a personalized timeless piece you can call your very own.
You will be able to choose between making a ring, earring or bracelet from either copper or silver. Choose from the add-on section below to fit your requirements and we will let the hosts know to prepare your specifications before your arrival.
Note: The default price of $15 is for a copper bracelet. If you want to make a silver ring or a silver bracelet, please select it from the above add on section.
