For decades, the Silver trade in Yogyakarta has centered around Kotagede, the ancient capital of the Mataram Kingdom founded in 1582. Silver was initially crafted upon the order of the royal houses, however, Kotagede flourished as an enclave for silversmiths when the wife of the then dutch governor to Indonesia Mary Agnes introduced and trained skilled silversmiths in Jogja to produce the finest export quality silverware and jewelry. Since that time in the 1930s, silver production has been a mainstay for many who live in Kotagede. Mr Sumedi, our host is the member of one such family that has been in the trade for generations.
In this backstreet workshop, you will get a rare opportunity to craft your own jewelry. We encourage you to bring your own design/pattern or shape and form for the jewelry you wish to create.
