More About This Experience

For decades, the Silver trade in Yogyakarta has centered around Kotagede, the ancient capital of the Mataram Kingdom founded in 1582. Silver was initially crafted upon the order of the royal houses, however, Kotagede flourished as an enclave for silversmiths when the wife of the then dutch governor to Indonesia Mary Agnes introduced and trained skilled silversmiths in Jogja to produce the finest export quality silverware and jewelry. Since that time in the 1930s, silver production has been a mainstay for many who live in Kotagede. Mr Sumedi, our host is the member of one such family that has been in the trade for generations. In this backstreet workshop, you will get a rare opportunity to craft your own jewelry. We encourage you to bring your own design/pattern or shape and form for the jewelry you wish to create. Your hosts will then help you through the entire process - from flat metal sheet to a personalized timeless piece you can call your very own. You will be able to choose between making a ring, ear-ring or bracelet from either copper or silver. Choose from the add-on section below to fit your requirements and we will let the hosts know to prepare your specifications before your arrival. Note: The default price of $15 is for a copper bracelet. If you to make a silver ring or a silver bracelet, please select it from the add on section below.

Additional Information:

  • Pick-up point: The exact pick-up location address will be sent to your email immediately after your booking
  • Venue is located around 15 minutes drive from the city center - we recommend using a transport app (Gojek/Grab) as the cheapest and most reliable way to get there
  • There are steps in the process that involve flaming the metal to soften it, this will strictly be done by the host
  • Bringing a bottle of water is recommended

Tried a couple of Backstreet Academy's cultural tours (Silver smithing, archery and gamelan music) after soaking in the local sights and didn't regret any of the experience. Aryo and his crew run a tight ship, and he is very accommodating and quick to respond to any enquire. My personal favourite was the gamelan music course. Not only was the workshop venue scenic (the vast green fields were a sight to behold!), it was really interesting to learn more about this intriguing local music form from an accomplished master. Plus you get to play a part in keeping the local arts heritage alive! Highly recommended to all and will not hesitate to patronise Backstreet Academy in a heartbeat. :)
