More About This Experience

Do you eat your way through life? Us too! Tuk Tuk Safari loves food and Vientiane is a foodie's paradise just waiting to be devoured. This gourmet safari visits local restaurants, hole-in-the-wall eateries, markets, factories and outdoor kitchens ? so you can sample a smorgasbord of authentic and modern Lao food. We'll start the tour by helping to make and then tasting kao larm, the delicious traditional dessert of sticky rice and coconut roasted in bamboo tubes. Then you'll visit a local fresh food market to check out the amazing diversity of Lao food, and stop for a while in the market for a traditional Lao coffee. For lunch we visit the most popular kao piak shop in town. Kao piak is a traditional Lao breakfast or lunch soup made with a fragrant broth and thick handmade rice flour noodles. Have a peek in the kitchen and watch the frenetic preparation for the lunchtime rush! The restaurant also has a tham mak houng (green papaya salad) stall where you'll learn how to make papaya salad just the way you like it. Then sit down and enjoy your lunch with the locals! After lunch, visit the Xaoban Homemade Yoghurt factory, where you'll sample a range of their wares and see how Xaoban products are made with fresh organic ingredients, and get an idea of the challenges for food production in Laos. Finish off with a BeerLao and some deep fried bugs at a popular beer bar on the Mekong. Details This tour includes tasting a variety of foods generally including meat and fish. My partner and I had a lovely time on this tour. We were certainly taken to a variety of different places, restaurants, street food stalls, markets and more. We learned a lot about Lao food and also the influences of other nearby countries on Lao food. The market was incredible, we were treated to freshly made orange juice and pork ribs straight from the bbq. Our tour ended in a great bar overlooking the Mekong River with a beer in hand, full bellies, and smiles on our faces. A great day!

Ere was the perfect guide and we had a fantastic time visiting various eateries in Vientiane. We started the tour at a house where they make sticky rice with coconut and tarot cooked in bamboo tubes on a fire. Delicious. Then we went for fresh rice wrappers with fermented pork and crispy onions. Delicious. A market tour where we sampled some sweet treats and a refreshing lemon iced tea, all delicious. We took a break from eating to make offerings and visit a lovely wat. Then it was lunch of noodle soup at Ere's family restaurant this was really delicious and we finished with eating bugs and drinking beer Lao overlooking to Mekong. Ere dropped us back at our guest house at the end of the day. He was such a friendly and knowledgable guy and I would recommend tuk tuk safaris for sure! Thank you so much!

I did the near day-long food trip and was the highlight of my three days in Vientiane. We went to about 7 places, all over. Well organized and a truly original way to see the city. Many restaurants are local-only places, you would have no idea how or what to order if you weren't accompanied by a local. Our driver-guide was a charming young local guy who had lived many years in Australia and had amazing English, a really great guy. Very highly recommended, you won't regret a tour with them.

We had a great tour with Ere and the guys at Tuktuk Safari. A great way to get around Vientiane and learn more about Laos and culture. They have a great variety of tours and activities (farm visits, temples, food places etc) and it's really nice to to go with a guide who can translate and also explain the significance of what is happening to foreigners. Highly recommend for any travelers to Vientiane!

We travelled with our three year old, and also he had a brilliant day! Ere is a great guide, the program is very well-thought and a nice mix of food and thought and even doing things.. : really more off the so called beaten track than the usual run of the mill, brilliant food along the way, good stories, nice information.. There was really not a better way to spend a day in Vientiane. The communication beforehand was good, the company flexible, the experience couldnt have been better. Comes highly highly recommended. I wish we could tour the whole of south east asia like this.
