More About This Experience

A casual stroll down any street in the old city of Udaipur and it becomes fairly evident that Udaipur has a long history of stone masonry. You can see the fine works of ancient stone masons on the palaces, or the numerous craftsmen working on little stone sculptures all along the streets of the old city. It is back breaking work and after having tried this course ourselves, we've developed an immense respect for those who work with hard stone. Keeping in mind that working with hard stone can be tough for beginners, we've opted to offer you a softer more pliable soapstone. Important to note that while the soft-stone is easier to work on, it's also easier to make a mistake on. Burilal will get you started with marking the parts of the stone slab that you will have to chip off to first get the general shape. Once you have the general shape, you will move on to the more intricate parts of the design - Burilal will assist you in any part that you're not entirely confident with as it can be quite delicate when carving the facial features. With the carving done, you will move on to using various grades of sandpaper where the last step involves water-sandpaper which will give it that distinct shine. If the shine isn't too your liking then Burilal will be more than happy to oil it for you!

Additional Information:

  • Girls should not wear skirts as the course will be conducted sitting on the floor.
  • An outdoor setting so please bring water to stay hydrated.

I was very happy to see that Backstreet Academy is now in Udaipur. I chose to do the stone sculpture class, where I had a chance to carve my own Ganesh statue from a block of stone. I have never done anything like that before, but knew in was in great hands. I love my statue. I was picked up from my homestay, brought to the craftsman's work space and made to feel comfortable by the BSA staff. They were with me the whole time, translating when needed. The local artist did a rough outline to show me where I needed to carve and helped me through the whole process. He was very friendly and patient with me. After I chipped my Ganesh's ear off, we laughed about it and he was able to fix it for me. It was awesome being able to create my own souvenir of this magical place, while creating great memories instead of just buying it off the street. BSA is very well priced. The value that you get out of their classes are worth much more than you pay. Also, it is great supporting local artists and craftspeople. I can not recommend BSA enough. I will continue to look for them in any country I travel to.
