More About This Experience
For young female peranakans in the Malayan peninsula since the 19th century, bead work and embroidery skills are often highly regarded as a reflection their worth as brides.
Many of them learn these skills very young in their lives, taught by their mothers who hand down these skills generation after generation.
Their biggest work is usually making beaded shoes for themselves to wear during their wedding. A true test of their skills and endurance, these shoes take almost 2-3 months to complete.
They are made entirely with cut beads measuring only 1mm in size (also known as manek potong). These beads are now highly treasured as they are very difficult to find nowadays.
In this lesson while you won't be able to make your own beaded shoes, you will be able to learn how the basics of this technique and try making your own pendant, keychain or hairpin as shown in the pictures. Simply let me know your choice when making the booking.
