More About This Experience
Soapstone is a type of metamorphic rock composed largely of the mineral talc. It is rich in magnesium and has been the main resource used for carving for thousands of years throughout the world, from the Indian Maharajahs to the Inuits, old American tribes and Chinese dynasties. It's usage however vary widely, in India and parts of Asia, it is mostly used for carving statues and ornamental objects, including seals. In the Americas it is slightly more functional, where some cities have their roads paved with soapstone. Other uses including pots and pans, although ornamental objects are also the norm there.
In Cambodia, most of the soapstone is produced in Pursat province for carving. Khmers believe that soapstone can help to ward off evil spirits and more interestingly help them to remember their dreams when they sleep! They simply put a piece of soapstone under their pillows which will then help people remember their dreams vividly once awake. Be it to remember your dreams or create a personal souvenir to remind you of your adventures in Cambodia, join us for this special carving experience with our expert local instructor, Mr Khet and his brothers.
