More About This Experience

No commodity is better embraced by the Cambodian culture like copper is. And under the artisanship of the Cambodian copper-smiths, you will realize that this is a truly marvelous art! Their highly intricate designs and craftsmanship is only matched by the skilled carvings at the Angkor temples themselves! Khmer copper craft has had a long history with its people, making it a fully matured and highly developed art form one can deeply appreciate. In this exclusive course offered by Backstreet Academy, you will get a rare opportunity to create your own timeless piece. Carve your own custom copper bracelet starting from a flat piece of metal. The opportunity here is to create your own pattern/design that you want on the bracelet. Once you have your design, you sketch and crave the design on a flat piece of the metal. Then under the masterful guidance of the host, you chisel, cut, hammer, shine and wash the metal until you arrive at the final product.

I spent a lovely couple of hours making my copper bracelet under the guidance of the tutor, There are no pattern stamps involved - you learn to make the design you choose in the traditional method with a series of tiny chisels and punches, engraving into the copper. The family who run the shop and courses come from a tradition of silversmithing dating back 400 years and the artistry of their work is a sight to behold. A wonderful experience and well worth trying. Very hands on and while your finished article is not going to be shop-quality it will be something you made from start to finish. Take a break from the tourist trail and discover Cambodia.
