More About This Experience
Get your dancing shoes on for this one (well, figuratively speaking because most Khmer dances are done barefoot). ;) While your idea of dance in Cambodia mostly centers around Apsara dancers performing stories from the Ramayana, you'll be surprised to know that there are several other forms of dances that are as much a part of Khmer culture as Apsara dancing, namely Monkey dance and Coconut Dance, both with their own distinct styles.
Staring off with the usual suspect, we'll first have you wear the traditional attire before beginning the introductory class for Apsara dancing with your host and dancer extraordinaire, Pho Sophors. A small demo from the her will make it apparent that there are a lot of things to learn in Apsara dancing, but fret not, she will also be able to bring you through the entire process slowly, starting from the foundation warm ups, basic techniques before the more difficult spins and poses.
As a continuation to Apsara dancing, which is essentially the role of female characters, we will move on to the lesser known Monkey Dance which are the male characters that accompany the Apsara dancers during performances. Here, in addition to putting on the traditional attire, you will also get to put on masks of monkeys to fully get into character. ;) - You need to jump around, crawl, scratch yourself, mimicking the moves of an extremely mischievous monkey. Dancing doesn't get more fun than this. ;P
The next dance on the repertoire is a bit removed from the Ramayana, and closer to the daily realities of Cambodians - the Coconut dance is performed mainly during weddings and Khmer New Year. As the name suggests, you will be expected to dance holding half-cut coconut husks in both hands.
Note: You will be getting into traditional Khmer attire while learning the various dance forms we have lined up for you, we advise you to wear t-shirts and shorts as long jeans and skirts won't look good for the cameras. ;)
