More About This Experience

Coconut husks are one of the most useful raw material in Cambodia. Not only is it plentiful, it is also very strong and posseses beautiful grain patterns. Try carving a keychain or anything you fancy from coconut wood, you'll be surprised how easy it is and how nice it'll turn out. You can really make anything you want from coconut! The only limit is your imagination. Besides keychains and decorative pieces show here, you can also make your own cutlery and little saucers if you like!

Had a fantastic time making my own elephant key chain- and it actually looks like an elephant! Booked my class through their website backstreetacademy.com and had a response the next day- so very efficient (it does require you to pay a deposit online). But then it was a matter of meeting my guide who was comfortable to chat away in English while I attempted sawing (failed), filing (inc. my nails), sanding, carving and polishing. Luckily Sok Chea (craftsman) was carefully supervising and was able to assist to ensure I didn't end up with a disfigured elephant. So overall a great experience, definitely a unique one and helps out the local craftspeople!

"A memorable experience" My wife and I heard about Backstreet Academy, and decided to try the coconut carving experience. $15 each seemed like quite a lot, however the organisation is all about helping poor craftsmen make a living by sharing their skills with tourists. And it really was an interesting and fun activity. Our two tutors were great, as was the young lady who helps translate. In the hour-long session, we each made a keyring which will always be a reminder of the fun we had making them. We also loved the shop there, where they sell lots of other hand made products. Our favourites were a selection of bags, wallets and purses made from re-used cement sacks (we couldn't resist buying some!). Overall, this was a morning we won't forget, and we'd highly recommend it.

The academy were kind enough to let me book a coconut carving class on my own for just $5 which was very reasonable. The guide had excellent English & she was punctual & fun - she also translated my questions & bought me some quail eggs to try. As it was only me, the class was over after just over an hour, but the experience was well worth it.

We did the coconut carving class and it was very fun. Everything went very smoothly with a pick up and drop off from the hotel which made everything a lot easier. The translator was very helpful during the class and the teachers were very friendly. All in all a great way to spend the day!
