More About This Experience

Always impressed by how artists could just sketch up a beautiful image with just a single pencil? You don't have to! In a single lesson you'll be able to learn a variety of techniques that will enable you to sketch most images you want to! Just show us the picture you'd like to draw and we'll be able to teach you all that you need to draw that and practice on your own. The 2 basic techniques of drawing are outlining and shading. The proportions during outlining are extremely important right at the beginning to ensure the end product looks good. Once the outline is established, its time to do the shading. With more than 10+ levels of shading, this is where practice makes perfect. With training here, you'll be able to learn much faster and know which kind of pencil to use for the desired darkness for the shading you want.

Additional Information:

  • Bring a picture you would like to sketch and we will attempt at a masterpiece :)
  • Pick-up location: Exact pick-up location address along with map direction will be sent to your email instantly after booking
  • Please be at the meeting point 10 minutes before the booking time

Massage and Sketching Class With Backstreet Academy, Phnom Penh I did both these courses and it was fun. The classes are usually in the 'backstreets' so you get to see non-touristy places. Both courses were fun and informative, the teachers really great and the translator, Kannon, was very professional, very dedicated and with a great sense of humour! Definitely recommended.

It was a really good experience! My very first portrait drawing. Though it didn't turn out as what I wanted to draw, but I did learn basics on face sketching and shading (and how it is able to create a 3D effect). Strongly recommended to those looking for an escape from the hot sun for 2 hours! Facilitator spoke awesome english too! Pickup and dropoff can be arranged after payment. So yeah, go for it!

This was simply amazing. If you are a beginner or already advanced, this instructor will share with you his knowledge and it will help you. I had a great time with him and painted one portrait with pencil and one landscape with watercolour in 4 hours. The Koordinator from Backstreetacademy "Tenzin" was motivating, translating and having interesting talks with me. This workshop is a must do if you love drawing or you wanna learn it. Try it.

As soon as we heard about Backstreet Academy, we knew we wanted to do a couple of courses - so we booked pencil sketching and coconut carving. Both classes were excellent! Both classes also had lovely translators who picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel and helped us communicate with our instructors. They were both students who were helping to fund their education by working for Backstreet Academy. The sketching class was great fun. We wanted to draw something from the temples in Angkor and our instructor showed us an image that he had drawn that we could copy. He took us step by step through the drawing and after 3 hours, we had both completed sketches that we were very proud of! Unfortunately, our instructor disappeared very soon after we had finished - we got the feeling we were keeping him from something towards the end - and we didn't get to thank him or say goodbye, which was a real shame as we had really enjoyed the lesson! The coconut carving lesson was a very unique and fun experience. The instructor and his assistant were lovely and showed us the process and we ended up making two lovely key chains, which are great souvenirs to take home. However, as a couple of other reviewers have stated, the lesson felt rather short. It is advertised as 2 to 3 hours... However, we finished after 1 hour 10 mins. We expected that we would be able to use our newly found coconut carving skills to make another keychain with the remaining time. However, this was the end of our lesson. We really really loved learning the intricate skill of coconut carving but wish the class had been advertised as being shorter so we hadn't left feeling a little disappointed. Overall, we highly recommend taking at least one class with Backstreet Academy. We loved them and are already looking into classes in their other branches in Vietnam and Laos.
