More About This Experience

Gear yourself up for the Phnom Penh Fear Factor challenge! What's fear factor for us is everyday fare for the locals in Cambodia. Deep fried with spices, garlic, herbs and garnished with lime, chilli and many other ingredients, this is one delicacy Cambodians love to have with their national beer. It's not as simple as just throwing everything into the boiling oil and fry until crisp. The marinating, preparation, selection of fresh grub takes skill and experience, and you get to learn it from one of the local masters in town! The practice of eating insects came about during the Khmer rouge regime where many had to eat insects to survive due to the severe starvation. After the war, necessity turned into tradition and people continued cooking it as local fare! You can choose the insects that you want to devour, with juicy water beetles, springy crickets, crunchy grasshoppers, melt-in-your-mouth worms and mini frogs on the menu. Be brave, complete the challenge and you can not only tell people you ate these but also prepared, marinated and cooked them! You won't be the first, even foreigners have converted to insect-eaters. If you're up for the baby egg, simply let us know and we'll hatch one for you :)

Additional Information:

  • Be at the pick up location at the tour start time
  • We suggest to keep an open mind, insects are not that bad you know. ;)

It may look scary, but I never regret going for this challenge! The hosts are very helpful and I get to learn it step by step for cooking the inserts. Its pretty easy and fun! Surprisingly the inserts taste really good. So don't worry, it won't hurt. I get to know of the guide name Pisal who speaks pretty good english and he is very friendly. He made us feel so welcome and I learned alot from him about Cambodia. Happy to have him as our guide.

My boyfriend and i have just returned from doing the insect cooking class in Phnom Penh and it was great fun. Not only do you have the course itself, getting to cook and eat the insects, we were taken to a family who specialise in the cooking by a very friendly and informative guide who told us a lot about cambodian culture, lifestyle and history on the way. We were picked up from our hotel and given lots of information about the city and country by our guide before arriving at our destination. Although the insects themselves were not all tasty (!) the cooking was good fun and something most people will never experience. I definitely recommend this activity and our guide (though i forget his name) and commend the professionalism and ease of booking everything online. Do this if you're culinary adventurous!!!

Had a really great time with this course. Our guide, forgot what her name was (wasn't easy to pronounce either :P) was really friendly and was very helpful in translating what we were curious to know about. Now that I know how to cook 'em critters, i'm gonna have to figure out how to catch them back here in Singapore! Cheers, Backstreet Academy! Will definitely recommend and go back for more courses.
