More About This Experience

The staple in the Angkor empire, apsara dancing was performed frequently for the royalty many years ago.Few people know the true original techniques of Apsara dancing today, but here you'll be able to learn from one of the masters who obtained their skills through generations of passing it down. There are a million things to learn in Apsara dancing! But don't fret! Our instructors will be able to bring you through the entire process slowly, starting from the foundation warm ups, basic techniques before the more difficult spins and poses. Join us for a short introductory course and we'll get you up and prancing in no time! And not just prance, but prance to impress! Note: Suitable attire would be T-shirt and shorts as you will be fitting into the traditional costumes and long jeans/skirts won't look nice for you in photos! The attire helps you move around easily too :)

I really enjoyed the teacher. He called himself Tom. Tom had a passion for dance and teaching and it showed through his lesson. I was the only student as other students did not arrive as planned. The location is not what I expected. The stage was outdoors in an enclosed vicinity. I would highly recommend this class for those who want to dig deeper into the Khmer culture. This dance is very difficult but also rewarding after you have completed the course. Ask for Tom to be your instructor if possible! :)

I really liked this. The teacher goes through the meaning of the hand gestures, they all have specific symbolism. The translator was very sweet. They took pictures and sent them to me. He even followed up with a restaurant recommendation. You get to wear the traditional skirt which puts you in the spirit. The teacher went through two choruses of a dance and do your best to remember. Do your best, listen, ask questions about the dance story and you will have a unique experience.

We had a really nice guide Yoem Visal who was very friendly. It was great that he explained to us the different sights in pp which made the tuktuk drive more enjoyable and interesting. He also made an effort to call me back after the lesson to answer a question I had asked him during the lesson ! Kimlay who helped arranged the tour was very efficient and helpful! It's really easy to book when you call him up because he speaks English really well !! + points since we made the booking just a day before the lesson ! Our dance instructor was really pretty and patient! Although the dance steps are pretty difficult to master, it's a great way to spend the hour if you want to try out something new and interesting ! Overall a great experience!

A dancer by profession myself, first thing I wanted to do at Backstreet Academy was the Apsara Dance class. Was amazed that classes can be organized within a day. Initially I had thought that I will need a week's prior booking for anything to happen. Was informed that any of the classes they offer can be arranged for in the next day, with the exception of major holidays. The instructor was very patient and spoke really good english. She also taught at a reasonable pace where I was able to keep up and yet learn quite a range of movements! I think I learnt a lot more in this one hour than I expected to. :) Looking forward to try out the Khmer Boxing Course next when I come back to Phnom Penh. K8
