More About This Experience

Come and learn traditional glass bead weaving with two Sisters from the Katu tribe. The Katu people are one of the many ethnic groups that make up Laos' cultural mosaic, and their weaving technique is truly unique. Glass bead weaving and smaller, lightweight bamboo looms are two elements that set Katu weaving apart. We want to share our passion for weaving, and spread this unique artisanal tradition to others. This craft has been passed down from generation to generation and we want to keep it alive. We offer a variety of classes for people to make their own personal traditional Lao souvenir. You can: - learn to weave your own headband - learn to weave your own necklace or bookmark - enjoy a yummy traditional Lao dinner! The base price includes a headband. OPTIONAL: You can learn how to set up the bamboo loom and bring home a set to bring home and practice your weaving skills ( 3 hours). Simply select the add-on below.

The Weaving Sisters' class was the standout of my week-long trip to Luang Prabang. As a textile lover, learning to weave added a new dimension to my appreciation of the art, plus it was great to try out a skill I can't easily learn back at home in the U.S. I also had a lovely belt to take back as a souvenir. The Sisters (Mone and Doi) were great teachers and I very much enjoyed getting to know them. I can't wait to visit again and take another class!

Mone and Doi are "The Weaving Sisters" and are two of the loveliest, caring, talented and friendly girls you will meet in Lao. Their skills with foot loom weaving and the processes involved with this (from dyeing the cotton, to stringing the looms and creating intricate weaving patterns) are outstanding. Not only that, they are amazingly patient teachers passing on their skills to novices and making the process a fun and positive learning experience. I really recommend that if you are in Luang Prabang and have the opportunity to do just a couple of things book this course! What I love most about doing weaving is that while you are learning you almost always end up spending a lot of that time with other customers and the girls learning about each others cultures and swapping stories and experiences. A really authentic chance to chat and learn in an informal environment that can be adapted to make it best for you. They are currently located in their house outside of the main LP town. Print out a map with the location if you are going to take a tuk tuk as the drivers may not be familiar. This was the highlight of my trip. I now have two new "Lao sisters" who I can't wait to meet again at some time in the future. Thanks Mone and Doi!

Fantastic time with the sisters. Came away with a bracelet I love, and a new skill that I can practice at home. Unfortunately I was very late to their place as the Tuk Tuk driver took me to the wrong place, but they were very accommodating and waved us down when we finally got to the right area. My only suggestion is that maybe transport can be provided as an optional extra for people like myself who aren't very confident with directions! Overall a wonderful experience that I highly recommend for those interested in Weaving and meeting two gracious Lao women.
