More About This Experience

Laos largely remains an agrarian society with more than 70% of 7 million Laotians directly involved in agriculture in one form or another. It's no wonder that there are many ancient farming traditions that have been carried down generations and are still well and alive and practiced widely even today. The agrarian lifestyle does not limit itself to the farming and raising farm animals alone, but also involves a fair bit of the hunter gatherer lifestyle where many Laotian families till today are adept in the ancient ways of hunting for crabs, birds, snails, rats and even foraging for wild mushrooms and vegetables which are all part of the diet. Suffice to say, it's not an easy daily life for most Laotians and this experience gives you a first hand peek into the life of a farmer in rural Laos. Imagine yourself transported back in time experiencing how the ancients of Laos lived where you will first begin by fishing and hunting for crabs (which will eventually be part of your meal) - tools of choice will be a traditional Lao fishing gun and a small fishing-net. It goes without saying that because of the hosts farming background, you will also get an insight into Laotian farming practices and get your hands dirty with some of the ancient techniques that endure till today. Your catches and finds for the day will also be part of the cooking class where you will learn to cook the Lao staples and share the meal with your host and his family. The second day will focus on farming which is about 15 minutes walk from the hosts house and depending on the season, you will get to participate on how to plant corn/rice, cutting weeds with traditional farming tools and collecting vegetables to prepare your lunch. To cap off your day after a hot farming morning, you have about 2 to 3 hours visiting Kuang Si waterfall. This is the most beautiful waterfall in Luang Prabang. Have a swim in the pools to cool off before heading back to Luang Prabang. We will make a stop to visit a local Hmong village (a hill tribe) on your way back to Luang Prabang. Program itinerary Day 1: 1pm: Pick up at your hotel and head to the village 2pm: Check-in in your guesthouse in the village 2.20pm: Meet your host and go for fishing and crab hunting (5 mins walk) 5pm: Prepare and have your dinner with the host's family Day 2: 7am: Get up and have breakfast at a noodle shop 8am: Meet your host again and visit their farm 11am: Prepare your lunch and have lunch with your host 12pm: Free afternoon at the Kuang Si waterfall (There is no translator/facilitator going with you.
