More About This Experience
The use of rattan in making various products is quite ubiquitous in Southeast Asia and it's not different in Laos where it is an important source of income for many communities in Laos. Rattan inspired crafts has helped many villagers and underserved communities to pick up new skills and earn additional income that supplements their farm work.
In keeping with a long tradition of working with rattan, many Laotians have become artisans and created excellent works of art from rattan weaving, and created a rich heritage among several communities scattered around Laos. In addition to products that are used in everyday life, rattan is also woven into decorative items or toys, enhancing the usefulness of rattan to a new level.
This rattan ball is especially interesting because it was popular used in the 1980s as a Lao sport called Kator, while there are quite a few people in the countryside that still use it and play with the rattan ball, there are very few people who can actually weave this ball.
In this workshop, we introduce you to one of our craftsman who has been working on this for more than 30 years. Mr Lon will teach you the basic techniques of rattan ball weaving and he will guide you through carefully step by step as you gradually bring to life your very own rattan creation. And if you're up for it then maybe a short game? :)
