More About This Experience

Ceramics in Laos were first discovered at a construction site near Vientiane, with several kilns and ancient ceramics dating back to the 15th century were found. It is almost certain that the history of ceramics and pottery in Laos dates to earlier periods than the 15th century as their have been discoveries in neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand to dates several centuries earlier. The use of pottery in Laos is mostly utilitarian and while you will not find intricate patterns and design in Laotian pottery, it does not take away from the beauty of these everyday objects that were once used in all households. In keeping with Lao tradition of pottery manufacture, situated on the opposite bank of the Mekong River, at a 10 minute boat-ride downstream from Luang Prabang, Ban Chan Village is known as a popular place for its high quality pottery products with long history on the traditional craft. And what better way to get a feel of this ancient craft than by getting down and dirty with our master pottery in a workshop where you will get to make your own earthenware. :) Note: The fire procession will take about 7 days, so if you stay in Luang Prabang more than 7 days, we can certainly fire it in the kiln and bring it to your hotel. Otherwise you can simply take home one of the host's final products.
