More About This Experience

Tamarind Cooking school offers 'A taste of Laos', an authentic cooking experience with insight into Lao ingredients, dishes and its cooking methods. The freshest ingredients are prepared daily and the instructors all have years of experience leading classes at the school. Be prepared to be delighted at the complex taste of Lao cuisine and how easy it is for you to pick them up in just one session at Tamarind Cooking school! You will be able to learn the following dishes: 1) A variety of 'jeows' - The Lao word for dipping sauces that goes with sticky rice 2) Mok Pa - Steamed Fish in Banana Leaf 3) Laap Gai - A minced chicken salad with fragrant herbs, a Luang Prabang staple 4) Lemongrass stuffed with Chicken - A Tamarind specialty! 5) A surprise dessert that you will find out on the day itself! And of course you will be taught how to steam the quintessential sticky rice using traditional methods as well! The morning class includes a market tour and runs from 9am - 3pm. The evening class is from 4:30 n- 8:30 pm and does not include a market tour and one less item is cooked. But our team supplements the dish that is omitted from the cooking class so you get to try it when it is time to eat. That is why the morning class costs more than the evening class. This price is for the evening class, which starts from 4.30pm to 8.30pm. For the morning class please select the add-on option as there is a surcharge by Tamarind restaurant. Note: Please be at the pick up point 15 minutes before the course start time.

The Tamarind cooking course was very good. Very hands on and interactive. They setting in the jungle and out of town is very good. My only suggestion would be to place a large mirror at the top of the chefs table to see what he was doing more easily. I have done many cooking classes around the world and this one has to be one of the best.

This was a fantastic experience. The location outside the city with a kitchen in a lush outdoor garden next to a frog pond was spectacular. Our chef walked us through making four delicious Laotian dishes. Sticky rice with tomato and eggplant dips, fish in bamboo leaves, chicken in lemon grass basket and coconut and sweet sticky rice dessert. All came out beautifully. I would recommend this for anyone who likes to eat not just foodies.

We love to cook, and booked this very reasonable cooking class (about $35-40 US dollars). We met at the Tamarind Restaurant and had a cup of tea while waiting for all the participants. There were about a dozen participants in the cooking class. We started with a trip to the market (they arranged for transportation). The cook, Joy, introduced us to all kinds of herbs, rice, and even sampling of some Laotian specialties. Then we went to their cooking facility which overlooks a beautiful pond with blooming lotus. We were given a recipe booklet of many Laotian recipes. The cooking presentation was wonderful. The cook showed how it was done, gave a recipe, then let us try that recipe. Substitutions were made for vegetarians or for dietary restructions. We made a sauce (jeow) for sticky rice, buffalo laap (minced meat), chicken in lemon grass, and spring rolls. We had a beautiful dinner overlooking the pond. We also made a coconut and red rice dessert. I learned so much about Laotian food and how to different dishes. This was a great way to spend six hours! Demonstrations and pacing is just right.

I have been part of a number of cooking classes in Asia and this is among the best. The recipes were delicious, and the recipe book professionally presented. The clear diagrams will be much appreciated when I get home. Hygeine was excellent. The rural setting was a delight. Altogether a great day and a happy memory. Great value for money.

We had a great time. For the cooking class they take you somewhere else out of town in a group of 12. The place you do the class is very nice and beautiful. The chef of Tamarind is the teacher and also provides help to make sure you are not screwing your dish ;). He is good, very professional, knows what he is doing and he is very funny. His English is very good too. So the course is very informative, practical, and you learn while having many laughs. We were also lucky that all the participants were very friendly and from the ride up we introduced ourselves and had a great time. Everything you cook is local and gives you a good idea of what the ingredients are, and how and why they use them. After you cook and do the work, they have the table ready for you to sit down and have a great dinner. They also offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (extra cost) to have with the meal. And apart from what you cook, they also give you extra Laos food to have a taste.... Be ready to eat lots of delicious food! :)
