More About This Experience

The creation of steel tools and weapons was a major landmark in human history, enabling us to rise above the animals, build farms and establish ourselves as the major race in Earth's history. This age old tradition is still being practiced very much the same way as it has been in this little village just outside Luang Prabang. The smithing families here have been in this craft for many years and the next generation will probably continue the tradition. In this course you will feel like a true blacksmith making weapons for the kings of yonder, except you are making one special blade for yourself. Choose from machetes or a hilt made of deer horn! If you are interested in farm tools, you could also make a sickle, hoe or something of your own liking! Owning your own customized blade just like a medieval King or Queen, how cool can metalworks get? When selecting the add-on, please tick the checkbox and input how many in the box to the right of the add-on. Ensure that the add-on is reflected in the payment summary before you make payment Please kindly note: - Without any add-on, your knife will come with a bamboo handle and covered with paper) - Please wear sunglasses, long clothes and walking/trekking shoes - Bring your own bottled water - The host will take over the dangerous steps like sharpening with grinder, creating the hole of the handle etc.

Additional Information:

  • Pick up will be via a tuktuk
  • Journey time from Luang Prabang to the blacksmith's is around 10-20mins
  • Master Blacksmith will be handling the dangerous parts of the process, and anything that you do not feel comfortable doing the master blacksmith will assist you.
  • You can bring home the knife you made
  • The default knife does not come with any cover. You can purchase an add-on if you would like a cover
  • The default handle is made of bamboo. You are able to customize the handle by purchasing additional add-ons
  • Wear long clothes, covered shoes and sunglasses for knife making
  • Bring your own bottled water

Everything about the experience was brilliant - host, facilitator, even the electric tuk-tuk. Only small issue was regarding payments to the host which were less than expected but I have since clarified with Backstreet that most of the reservation fee also goes to him.

I made a really nice knife, it was well organized and I had a great time! Got a lot of information from my translator Keo and the host helps you if you need it and he makes sure your knife is well done at the end! I highly recommend this experience!

Overall pretty good, but the backstreet translator didn't speak very good english and didn't translate as much of the blacksmith process as we would have liked.
