More About This Experience

Hmong embroidery is a skill practised only by the ethnic Hmong people in Northern Laos. They decorate their clothes, tapestries, cloths, towels, bags (almost everything!) with it. Most Hmong women are highly skilled in this skill and they are the busiest just before the Hmong new year churning out new designs for everyone in the family to wear. Learn how they create these intricate patterns and create something of your own on any cloth you like! You can choose to create just a decorative pattern on a piece of cloth or a small pouch, aprons, purses, or anything that you'd like! Simply check with the instructor and more often than not she's able to meet most of our guests' challenge ;) Note: Bring your own drinking water

Additional Information:

  • Pick up will be via a tuktuk
  • Journey time from Luang Prabang hotels is around 10-15mins
  • Mosquito cream

It was a great experience to learn Mon’s appliqué (not “reverse appliqué” which was developed in refugee camps in Thailand around 70’s~80s’s with support of foreign NGOs) I made a nice pouch with elephant appliqué but you can choose what to make, choose size, cloth both for the base and appliqué. It looks not too difficult but it is! At complicated points, she demonstrates then let you continue. So no need to worry. To make something, language barrier does not exist. I strongly recommend non-English speakers too join this kind of programs.

We had a great time with Chua Xiong and her daughter. With the translators help we learned about their life, embroidery, Hmong language and culture and their family. We laughed together while they helped us through our embroidering.

I had a great experience! The host was very sweet, though of course I was mostly communicating with the translator Oun, who was wonderful!! So sweet and engaging - I had a great time talking with him while embroidering. Definitely recommend.
