More About This Experience
There are around 29 slums in Kathmandu with around 2000 households. The slum dwellers are mostly made up of people who ran away from their villages during the Nepalese Civil war 10 years back, people who just came to the city for better opportunities or people who are just stricken from poverty.
One such slum is the Thapathali-Kupondole slum where there are about 145 households with about 500 people. Most of these people came from their villages fleeing the war and poverty in their villages.
The host for your tour Kamala has been living in this slum since this slum started. After her husband was taken forcefully to be recruited in the maoist army she came to Kathmandu to take care of her 4 children and give them a chance for education.
Now Kamala, aged 42 is rearing livestock in her slum and doing irregular house work in the city is taking care of her children and her old parents.
