More About This Experience

You have seen everything from Kathmandu Durbar Square to Bhaktapur and Patan but did anybody tell you about how Thamel started? And which was the first hotel in Thamel. And why there seems to be metal belts on top of most of the temples? Come and join this historical tour with me where I take you to the alley ways and tell you the nitty gritty of all the small but important temples and step into the rich history and culture of Kathmandu which used to be the center of all the Kings in the past. This tour is for everyone who are interested to learn way more then what a simple sightseeing tour and who are interested in knowing how architecture, politics and culture are so inter-related. ;) First we will go the temple from where today's Thamel started and then we will slowly move towards Kathmandu Durbar Square. Somebody truly said, it's all in the journey that is why everything in the tour will take place in between Thamel and Kathmandu Durbar Square. You will be able to see the century old market, some 300 years old houses who were very much influenced by Prithvi Narayan Shah ( the Kind who unified Nepal), contrasting architectures, and some beautiful squares of Kathmandu. In between our tour we will also stop for some masala tea or lassis! ;) Please note that if you have selected an add on for pick up then we use local taxis.

Additional Information:

  • This tour is recommended for early morning or for evening time slots in summer time
  • The guests should be physically fit to walk for 2-3 hours. Of course there will be breaks in between. with alot of masala teas and small snacks
  • Guest are recommended to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and drink enough water
  • Please note that the pick up and drop off is only for areas outside Thamel
  • Be at the pick up location at the tour start time.

Sandeep brought me to see the little alleyways and secret courtyards of Kathmandu that I would not have known and visited if I had not joined this tour. I also learned much about Nepal's culture and religions during this tour.

This tour was better than I could have imagined. I t was fun to dip into a little tunnel and pop out in a courtyard! I saw a list of “must see” sites: temples, palaces and statues. I even had the experience of seeing Kumari, the Living Goddess.
