More About This Experience

Hailed as the pizza's asian rival, Chatamari actually has a history older than that of pizza itself! Made with a rice crepe skin, the filling is entirely up to your creativity, and they can be served both closed or open-faced. Learn how to make this traditional dish of the Newaris and impress your friends & family back home! The chatamari is the main show, but no chatamari dish is complete without traditional sauces, aloo tama (a special kind of stir fried spiced potato) and a unique blend of meat filling that is delicately wrapped into the chatamari while still on the pan! Get to prepare some of the key ingredients and know some of these mysterious spices that makes Nepali food so exotic and also learn to make the chatamari skin and wrap it up! Please note that if you have selected an add on for pick up then we use local taxis.

Firstly, we absolutely love the concept of the Backstreet Academy. The organisation links tourists up with a local student "facilitator" (who speaks excellent English, is very friendly, and sorts out the pickups and logistics), and a skilled craftsperson appropriate for the course, who may have had limited contact with tourists in the past and is genuinely a local. We did the Chattamari course, it was very good, with a friendly facilitator and cook. We didn't get time to make the potato dish that was mentioned on the website, so it might be best to confirm this when booking if it is something you are keen to do. The recipe was included in our handout though. We have continued to look out for Backstreet Acadamies in other towns we visit.

We did the lantern making, the jute bag making and the chatamari making classes in Kathmandu. We loved meeting the local guides and teachers and really felt like we saw a part of Nepalese culture that many visitors do not see. The chatamari are naturally gluten free, which is a big reason we picked that cooking class. The instructors were great. I would say that one needs to keep an open mind, as our teachers were not the ones listed on the website, and the cooking class was more demonstration than hands on. So be flexible. That said, it is truly a fantastic program, and I am so glad we took the classes we did.
