Kaapa Lnaka in the Newari language means shoes made out of cloth. These special slippers are worn by Newari brides during on their wedding day. Traditionally the Kaapa Lnaka were worn by brides as it was forbidden to wear leather during the religious ceremony, and also red is assumed as an auspicious color and signifies wealth. Many people also find it comfortable alternative to indoor slippers and these days it is often worn indoors and not just in special occasions. Come and learn how to make these beautiful shoes by your own hands with very little interference of any machine. Our host is a group of active women who have been at this craft all their life but only recently have they officially started to sell these products themselves. You will start this workshop by cutting your own fabric and the two soles (inner and outer). After that you will embroidery your selected creative designs, following with stitching the inner sole and the outer fabric together. The step is a bit tricky for those who are not familiar with sewing, but no worries, you will conquer it under our host's instruction. :) We will have a small break in the middle of the class and we will take you to some of the hidden temples in the nearby area and have some Nepali tea. Please note that you cannot wear the shoes the same day. You will have to let it dry overnight and you can start wearing it from the second day.
