More About This Experience

One of the most prized commodities in the old world before the industrial revolution, the art of silk looming was understandably a fiercely guarded secret. Now you can take a look at the entire process from farming the silk, weaving the fibre and finally looming your own piece of silk fabric! This is not just a tour where you just snap pictures, you actually get to create your own patterns on a silk loom! Start off by trying your hand at separating the silk from the worms by heating them in a bowl of water. The resulting silk fibres will then be weaved into lines of silk threads with a wheel and finally the complicated looking loom will be set up for you to create your own little silk masterpiece! Please note that if you have selected an add on for pick up then we use local taxis.

Additional Information:

  • Exact pick-up location address along with map direction will be sent to your email instantly after booking
  • Be at the pick-up point 10 minutes before the activity begins
  • Using the handloom can sometimes be difficult so feel free to get as much assistance from the host as needed
  • Be at the pick up location at the tour start time.

I appreciated how clearly all the steps were explained and demonstrated, and how hands-on we were encouraged to be throughout the day. The pace was perf... Read more

Tour guide Aayam had lots of personality. Another lady who was there with Menuka was really funny, ahe gave us really nice tea and yam. Don't expect to take home a nice souvenir, the machines are old and broken and it would take hours to get a decent piece of silk to take home. The silk that you w... Read more

It was something different and very informative. Met on time by the Back street Academy guide who on our walk to the Silk workshop explained to us the Hindu gods seen on the nearby shrine. He stayed throughout to give an excellent translation from Nepalese to English and visa versa. We thoroughly... Read more
