More About This Experience
Kathmandu with all her chaos and urban clutter isn't exactly known for fresh farm produce with more than 70% of the city's demand for fruits and vegetables are met by imports from India and China, but if you look hard enough in the nooks and crannies of this beautiful city - you can find pretty much everything, including a self-sustaining vegetable farm complete with 7 cows and a pen for hens.
Our host for this activity, Suku, runs what is essentially a tomato farm but he also plants seasonal vegetable and milks his cows daily to provide sustenance for himself and those living on the farm with him. For this farming experience you will get to participate in practically all parts of the process of farming vegetables from ploughing, tilling, planting saplings/seeds, cutting the stems of tomato plants and even the correct way of plucking the vegetables (please note here that the vegetables you will be working with will be seasonal). This is back-breaking work to say the least to so prepare yourself for a hard day's work and learn how all the food that lands up on our plates actually gets there. Not to worry though, you will get regular breaks and Suku can even make some nice Nepali tea for you to drink on the farm-side.
Once you're done with the farming then it's on to milking one of Suku's seven cows for fresh milk which he will then boil for you to drink. How cool is that! At the end of the activity, Suku will also show you around his farm and prepare a light meal for you to share and end the day with.
