More About This Experience

The thangka style of art have been around in the Nepali art scene for several centuries now, and it's believed to have come in about the same time that Tibetan Buddhism was introduced in Nepal. While it may first appear to be mostly for aesthetic purposes,a Thangka holds more meaning than meets the eye. Most Thangkas typically depict images of deities, images of Buddha and Mandalas. Inasmuch as the Thangkas are visually significant, the process of making the Thangka hold equal significance; Thangkas are used as teaching tools depicting the life of the Buddha or describing other historical events about important Lamas, many also use it as the centrepiece for religious ceremonies and rituals but most importantly, practitioners of the art also use it as a meditation tool to the path of enlightenment. One might presume that only buddhist monks practice this art form, but you'll be surprised to know that many monks have taken those not part of the monastic life under their tutelage as apprentices and there are several non-monks today in Nepal who are just as adept in making Thangkas. Bikash is one such individual who has been making Thangka for close to two decades now and imparts the knowledge and techniques he has garnered over the years to anyone who is interested in this art form. For this class, we'll have you make something basic that can be completed in about 3-4 hours and Bikash will teach you how to utilise the cornerstone techniques of Thangka art (Sirdang: small horizontal lines and Choptang: Small dots) to bring out the best from your work. If you have prior experience and you're interested in more complex patterns and designs then do let us know and we'll be happy to arrange a longer course for you. For a Buddha painting, please select the add-on. Please note that if you want to do a detailed painting or mandalas then please contact us or send us an inquiry and we let you know how many class you will need depending upon the type of painting you want to do. When selecting the add-on, please tick the checkbox and input how many in the box to the right of the add-on. Ensure that the add-on is reflected in the payment summary before you make payment.
