More About This Experience

Ever wondered how all the ancient inscriptions and hieroglyphics got onto the caves? Learn how to carve on stone and inscribe anything you like onto smooth slates! You can also learn how to carve traditional Nepali patterns and understand the meaning behind them! Stone carving is actually not as difficult as many people think! While they used to be the exclusive domain of imperial scribes and the sages who read the stars, now they're as accesible to you and I. Just like drawing, there are just a few simple processes before we are able to carve out a simple design on stone! You don't need too much strength either, its more of precision rather than brute force! Create your own little piece of history now. Please note that if you have selected an add on for pick up then we use local taxis.

Additional Information:

  • Working with stone is exhausting so please stay hydrated and ask your host for as many breaks as necessary
  • Exact pick-up location address along with map direction will be sent to your email instantly after booking
  • Women are recommended to wear trousers as this activity is conducted sitting on the floor.
  • Be at the pick up location at the tour start time.

I did the stone carving workshop through Backstreet academy on my last day in Nepal and I'm so glad I chose to do it! I was met by my host, who took me to his shop and taught me all the necessary skills I would need. Hom was brilliant- friendly and easy to talk to. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone interesting in making a stone carving as a Nepal souvenir- it's amazing what you can carve in an afternoon :)

This is my first time to do stone carving, quite an different experience in Nepal! Although I am not good at it, the host is still patient to help me finish the work. I think this class is worthy and I recommend those who visit Thamel can try it!

I did a stone carving class through Backstreet Academy and it was really cool. The whole system they have set up is easy to use and professional. I was picked up by a Backstreet employee who brought me to the stone carving shop and helped translate during the class. Both the translator and the stone carving master were fun to be around and very helpful. They could tell I was getting frustrated during the class (I've learned that stone carving isn't my forte, haha) and did everything they could to make it easier and more enjoyable for me. Even though I probably won't be doing any more stone carving in the future, I would definitely do another class or activity through Backstreet Academy. And I'm pretty proud of the work I created :)

We had such a fun morning creating our stone carving masterpieces, albeit with some finishing touches by the master stone carver. We would really recommend this workshop to anyone who wants to try something a bit different.
