More About This Experience

It's one thing to do an ordinary homestay, but it's quite another to do a homestay with the family of a master crafter and sample what it would be like to be the apprentice of the Kedar, the likes of whom have built the magnificent ancient cities of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur! Kedar Dhanuki, the host, specialises in wood carving (masks in particular) and he's been at it for more than a decade now. Over the span of two days in Kedar's house you will learn the basics of how to carve a beautiful wooden mask while living exactly as he does. Fret not, if you have doubts about whether you'll actually manage to keep pace, because Kedar is a veteran in teaching travellers how to carve masks and he's already hosted over a 100 travellers to date. :) The process is simple but it'll require a fair bit of patience and you will have to pay careful attention to Kedar's instructions during the workshop at his home. Rest assured, you will leave Kedar's home with a beautifully carved mask that you can call your own creation. In addition to the activity, you will learn much about the family too. Kedar's personal story is a captivating one - his wife left for South Korea in 2013 as a migrant worker to supplement the family income and Kedar looks after their two children as a single parent.
