More About This Experience

The art of paper flower making is very well-known in Thanh Tien Village in Phu Vang District, Thua Thien-Hue Province. For over 300 years, they have built and maintained this reputation and supplied directly to the royalty in the Imperial Capital of Hue. Particularly famous for its lotus flowers they are used for decorating solemn places, altars, traditionally replaced annually during the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). The queer thing here is that they actually use paper lotus flowers made here rather than real lotuses, and this is because the weather in Hue is rather harsh with heavy rainfall and sunlight that makes growing flowers an uphill challenge. Thus the locals used their ingenuity and started making paper flowers to replace fresh ones and it has now been cemented into tradition. That is the reason for the popularity of Thanh Tien paper flower. Nowadays, it is not only use for worshipping but also for decorating in houses, restaurants and others, it is also a national flower of Vietnam. In addition, lotus paper flowers can be kept for a long time and is an intricate craft to learn. Create your own paper lotuses from masters at the thanh thien village!

We had a fantastic time making paper lotuses. The techniques were very clever . Our host was lovely and helped when neccessary. Our only down side was the organisation. The map sent to us was of little use to find the meeting stop and the tel numbers we had been supplied with didn't work. As a result we wasted an hour in a taxi looking for the venue. When we got back to the hotel we had a email with the facilitators tel no and with the help of the hotel managed to find the venue. This did mean we started this session very frustrated. The only thing that would improve the session was if the host made a flower along side us so you could keep seeing exactly what to do. I would highly recommend this activity, even given our issues with finding the place.

I had a lot of fun making the lotus flowers. It was a lot harder than I first thought. That was amazing to watch. Mat PS: The place was a little hard to find. I am not sure we would have found it alone. Since the mutual wrapping of the paper is so important to the look of the flower maybe we should just use paper he wrapped

Wow! I had not anticipated how much techniques and works went into paper flowers. Mr. Nhat is incredible with his speed and precision. What skills! Very interesting to watch and attempt for ourselves. Our translator was very helpful. Thank you for a great afternoon!

Super pleased with our effort in making the paper flowers. During the class I couldn't help but recall my origami lessons as primary school student, to the point where I started making paper planes and cranes just to see if I still remembered those techniques. My local hosts were pleasantly surprised that I actually remembered something I hadn't done for some 15 years now. Thanks for this superb experience!

My hubby and I couldn't really believe when the final product was ready. We are not exactly the arty type and we somehow still managed to make these beautiful looking lotus flowers. We cannot thank our host Than Dinh enough for this wonderful lesson, he was so patient the whole time and kept showing us the correct method so that we would ultimately make ourselves a flawless looking lotus. For it was heartening to see young people in Vietnam so interested in their craft – we were told that by day he is a farmer and making paper flowers is a hobby that he pursues during his free time. This is something you cannot miss when you're in Vietnam. We highly recommend it.
