More About This Experience

Bamboo is actually quite a remarkable resource. It is not only sustainable but also a very light and strong material. Vo Van Tan has had a love affair with bamboo for a long time, but it wasn't until he started looking deeply into the utility of bamboo that he found out all the amazing things that this plant is capable of. It comes as no surprise that bamboo - difficult to break yet easy to bend - is commonly used, be it in the construction of making an entire houses to small bamboo souvenirs and crafts. In addition, mostly associated with the wind instruments, bamboo is also used to construct a variety of musical instruments and furniture. Examples include the speaker cabinet which is comprised of tuned bamboo tubes on a bamboo frame. The instrument is shaken and struck at the same time, creating a percussive and tuneful sound. On addition, there are plenty of utility items that can be made from bamboo. Join us in this course to discover the absolute versatility of the bamboo and create your own handmade bamboo craft with our friendly host.

It was an eye-opening experience to be able to carve out bamboo and we didn't know what laid ahead of us until we were greeted by the owner, Mr Tan, came to the pick-up point in his own self-made bamboo car? We were certain that it was going to be one heck of an experience! We were utterly humbled to meet this man who builds anything and everything from bamboo and have it be an integral part of his life. We were amazed at the high level of commitment and dedication he has to his craft and how it helps to shape his family and his peoples' lives around building a livelihood out of bamboo - have you seen his bamboo home? Totally amazing! We were impressed by his patience in teaching us what he knows within the 3 plus hours we were at his home and we hope that there will be more chances for us to visit his home soon to build other things! We went home with a bamboo cup each and a wealth of knowledge in the art of bamboo-making. Our highest level of respect goes to him and may his Taboo brand flourish even more though the years. Thank you for the amazing experience and for opening up your home to us Mr Tan, may God bless you always :) Lots of love, Elly & Izwan March 4th 2017

Such a lot of talent in our host! He was a wonderfull man who showed us how to make the natural speakers using bamboo. It was amazing to see the craft and its discovery is absolutely fascinating. We cut, sawed, carved and tuned our own bamboo speakers. My boyfriend made one design, and I made another. It was such a great thing to take from Vietnam. We really enjoyed interacting with our host, a young passionate man who also makes bamboo bicycles himself! Also, our translator was very friendly and speaks English very well. We will be taking more activities with Backstreet Academy when we head to Hanoi next week!

One can truly see how utility is derived from anything imaginable in developing countries and I truly admire the highly resourceful qualities of the people in Asia. I've always been one to have an interest to 'make' things so I signed up to make my own bamboo product. I didnt know what to expect expect that I saw there was a few choices from the pictures, and indeed, I was given the option to choose what I wanted to make. I choose the speakers design, which also seemed to be a popular item in the workshop. It was not only impressive to see the ingenuity in the discovery of using bamboo to make speakers but the simplicity to create them was encouraging. I will definitely be trying to attempt to make this again. I was so impressed that I made one and bought one of the shelf. This was definitely a great find in Hoi An, highly recommend this activity.
