Calligraphy is an art from China and has been quietly accepted by the Japanese, Koreans, and Vietnamese. The art form appeared in Vietnam from the 1950s to the 1960s. In Eastern countries including Vietnam, calligraphy is done by writing the characters with a special style using brush, ink and paper. Rather than modern means like iron pen or rulers etc, this style with brush have brought the art of writing up the peak with rich theory, philosophic, and meditation. Traditionally in Vietnam, on every occasion during spring especially Tet holiday (Lunar New Year holiday), people come to the home of the "Word Master" to ask for the letter so that they can frame it and hang on the wall as a picture, as well as decorations but also as spiritual article. They would have one or more words written on a large sheet of paper, with the content of praise or education, the character is often praised as beautiful dragon flying phoenix. Such writing is called the Calligraphy. The words they ask for represents their wishes or their appreciation to something in life. Join us in the 1.5 hour class in which our “Word Master” will teach you how to write Latin words in the artistic calligraphy way. At first glance, you may think that this subject is quite easy, as you can write in any way as long as it is beautiful. Actually, there are many rules of calligraphy, and our teacher will demonstrate some main principles during the class. Take a short break during your trip in the beautiful Hoi An to visit our host at his old quiet house inside a small lovely alley, then try something new but super local. And if you learn quickly enough, at the end of the class you can do some calligraphy on your own and self prepare special spiritual gifts for your family and friends.
