The art of lacquer, though considered by many as the national art of Vietnam is not widely practiced, mainly because of the complex techniques, long hours and eccentric materials used. This however cannot be said for all those interested to learn the art form. In this two hour workshop led by artist and professor, Mr Tran Anh Tuan will have you familiar with the Vietnamese form of lacquer art in no time. At the studio, you will have opportunity to admire various lacquer paintings inspired by the Artist himself, who will guide you through the steps of creating your own lacquer art and provide all the necessary tools, materials and know how to create your own masterpiece. Lacquer includes many steps, and basically, it requires long time to finish an artwork (sometimes it could take months for complex pieces). However, to bring an experience for people who just stay short in Hanoi but want to know much more about lacquer paintings than just buying them, Mr Tuan created a way of making lacquer in which you can practice 3-4 lacquer techniques in 2 hours and finish an artwork to bring back home - a special lacquer souvenir made by you. However, to make it clear, you can experience process of making lacquer paintings and learn a few techniques, but it is impossible to acknowledge the whole professional skills within 2 hours. Mr Tuan will helps you along, but it also depends on your aptitude, just like almost other artistic fields. On request, guests can also make lacquer painting or item of their own design. You can think about it in advance to save more time for painting process during the class.
