We are looking for a Front-End Web Developer who is motivated to combine the art of design with the art of programming. As a developer in our Front End team you will be building the user interfaces of the Backstreet Academy platform. You'll be a key part of the idea generation process, taking full ownership of the execution of the front-end of the platform and work closely with our designers, back-end developers, copywriters and user researchers to deliver a world class user experience! 
 
Responsibilities will include translation of the UI/UX design wireframes to actual code that will produce visual elements of the application. You will work with the UI/UX designer and bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and defining how the application looks as well as how it works. As a requirement, you will also be expected to be familiar with back-end programming languages like PHP and well versed in reading and understanding how backend technologies work.

Remuneration will be competitive with 3 phases. Probation period, stable and then results driven. The probation period of 2 months will be for you to see if this is the kind of job you like and if you are up to the challenge of working in a technology social enterprise with regional reach. In the stable period you will receive a fixed salary, and in the results driven period you will receive bonuses based on your performance and the company’s local performance as well.
Job Duties

  • Translate requirements and mockups into fully functioning features using JavaScript and HTML/CSS

  • Continuously look for ways to improve Backstreet Academy’s platform and implement A/B tests

  • Take ownership of sections of Backstreet Academy’s desktop, tablet and mobile web sites 

  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs

  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability

  • Continuously initiate conversations around solutions that are focused around improving the platform to make it world class!

  • Stay plugged into emerging technologies/industry trends and apply them into the development process 

Job Requirements
Essential

  • Expert understanding of core front-end web technologies (JavaScript, HTML, CSS)

  • Experience with JavaScript libraries such as JQuery

  • Experience with templating languages

  • Ability to write high-performance, reusable code

  • Experience troubleshooting cross-browser compatibility issues

  • Experience with data-driven product development: analytics, A/B testing, etc

  • Knowledge of version control systems

  • Comfortable working on a command line

  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Experience in a commercial environment; pragmatic, down to earth approach

  • Empathy for the end user

  • Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX

  • Basic knowledge of image authoring tools, to be able to crop, resize, or perform small adjustments on an image. Familiarity with tools such as as Gimp or Photoshop is a plus.

  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git / Mercurial / SVN

  • Good understanding of SEO principles and ensuring that application will adhere to them.
