More About This Experience

Learn the skill of back-strap weaving from a hill tribe artisan in the comfort of our air conditioned weaving room. A translator is also provided during instruction. You set the pace. Start with the basic weave, and if you choose to increase your skill, the final portion of the class will focus on learning a patterned weave. Your woven piece will be cut from the loom for you to take home as a special memory of your time in Chiang Mai. Have a DIY project in mind for your woven piece? Smaller pieces make wonderful accents to baskets or bookmarks, larger pieces can be made into wall hangings, coasters, or table squares. We will also have suggestions and DIY kits available for purchase if you are interested. Since 1973, Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade has assisted the sale and marketing of handiwork from seven different hill tribes. We practice fair trade principles to be equitable in all we do. Through these classes, we hope to create a greater appreciation of the culture and work of our artisans.

What a fantastic few hours spent weaving! I learned backstrap weaving with a hill tribe woman and a translator. Both were very skilled weavers and I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. I made a patterned weave and was able to take the section home with me that I finished. The translator made i... Read more
