More About This Experience

Eskrima (or Arnis), the Filipino national martial art, is less popular than its Thai counterpart - Muay Thai- but is just as lethal, perhaps even more because the key difference between the two is the use of weapons in Eskrima such as short sticks and knives. For almost a century now, the society of Doce Pares in Cebu city has been the bastion of Eskrima where several grandmasters have passed on their valuable skills to several generations of eskrimadors. It's interesting to note that Eskrima has been passed down over the centuries and never been codified or even had a standard set of techniques. Essentially, practitioners of the art passed down what they knew to close family and friends and often a style of fighting distinct to one family would only last a generation or two before being adapted into something totally different. Today, however, under the leadership of Doce Pares, Eskrima has not only gained the prominence among the martial arts community around the world, but it has also been codified and structured to form a curriculum that is recognized by the Department of Education in the Philippines. This class will teach you the basics of Eskrima and while you may choose between the short sticks (Yantok) or knives as your weapon of choice to learn, we would recommend the stick for beginners - mostly because it's easier to handle. Several of the grandmasters of Eskrima often drop by the Doce Pares gym during the weekends so if you want some old fashioned training then it's best you sign up for this class on weekends :) At the end of the class, you have the option of making your own Yantok's at the workshop above the gym. Don't worry if you're too exhausted after the class, we'll give you one as a souvenir anyway. :) Please see add-ons for more classes options NOTE: Join-in classes are every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6:00PM-8:00PM
