Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali which mostly consists of percussive instruments. The gamelan represents an indigenous art form that predates the Hindu-Buddhist culture that dominated Indonesia. The earliest image of a musical ensemble is actually already found on the Borobudur temple's bas relief sculpted centuries ago which speaks to this ancient musical form's timeless appeal! In this 2 hours workshop, the group will learn about the history of gamelan, the use of gamelan in the village context, and a demonstration by master musicians. The participants will then get an opportunity to play the instruments and learn to play a short piece.
