More About This Experience
On a clear day, Merapi can be seen on the distant horizon to the north of Yogyakarta - for some it adds an aesthetic backdrop to an ancient city, to others, the mountain beckons to summit its peak. Merapi certainly appealed to us in more ways than one, and for a long time, we had the itch to summit the volcano. After some planning, we finally did and at the same time put together a tour to share the experience with our guests.
Merapi's appeal also lies in the fact that it is full of contradictions. Beneath the grandeur of its slopes and its distinct crater, it masks a destructive force - ready to erupt and cause havoc at any instant. Where once lava and pyroclastic flows destroyed everything in its path, the same area now provides extremely fertile soil for agriculture and rock debris for construction. The biggest contradiction, however, lies in the fact that Merapi, while considered the most active volcano in Indonesia and perhaps the world, still finds local residents calling its slopes their homes and for thousands of travelers scaling its peak as the allure and appeal to scale Merapi is sometimes irresistible and sometimes sacred.
This tour is designed together with local rangers and guides that have worked in the mountain since they were little boys. Summiting the mountain on an average of 1 -2 times a week, the guides we work with, under the supervision of veteran climber and ranger Mr. Suroto, are well trained, experienced and know the mountain very well!
