More About This Experience

The ethnic hill tribes in Khmer used to be hunter-gatherers and the crossbow is an integral weapon in their culture as the main tool used for hunting. Crafted from the strongest bamboo and wood, these crossbows are capable of shooting further than your eyes can see in the jungle with your accuracy the only impediment to scoring a hit. Our 9 and 11 year old boys did this and loved it. The cross bows look really good and work well. Our boys needed a bit of help but this activity would suit all ages. Really worth while and highly recommended.

It has been a uniquely wonderful experience for our family on our last day of our 10-day trip. I only stumbled onto Backstreet Academy while searching activities for kids the day before our activity. And as soon as I saw the the two activities, cross Making and rattan basket weaving (which I will write about separately), I knew my 9 yr old son and 8 yr old daughter would love it (ha ha, even though I was hoping to the whole family would go rice farming which is another activity). And it turned out that the morning was well and meaningfully spent. My son was given the opportunity to chisel, hammer and sand a long piece of wood with the help of the host. Of course we were not skilled enough to make it all by ourselves, but just seeing the host skillfully go through each step was amazing enough! And of course the most exciting part was the test shooting at the very end. And apart from a a very small pin-size nail, all the parts (shaft, limbs, trigger, string, dart+fletching) use some sort of wood and bamboo!! I am sure both kids and 40-yr old "kids" would love it. I really wish more and more travellers, especially those with family, will know about Backstreet Academy since it is a trul rewarding experience - while we get to learn about a skill, we are able to make the tiniest contribution to the local craftsmen! Highly highly recommended!

This is a great project went with my sons to make handmade crossbows. It was really good fun. We were introduced to Mr. Mien who comes from a tribe who used to make these bows for hunting. My youngest (8 years old) said " it was amazing! Really good fun. It was quite difficult to make but it was worth the effort as it was so much fun shooting them. Really looking forward to showing my friends back home." The project run other activities that were fun. Check out their website. If crossbowsis not your thing then some of the other workshops will be!!
