More About This Experience

True to Backstreet Academy's unique identity, we offer a cooking class like no other. Keeping the authenticity intact, you will enter a Khmer household and see how Cambodian cuisine is created and appreciated by the locals. Cambodian cuisine is artful and complex at the same time, and the locals know how to best achieve the highest form of cooking with their spices and herbs. Choose from a wide variety of local dishes and treat your palate to a full course meal starting with an appetizer, a soup, a main and a dessert. Note: The experience provided by Backstreet Academy is one that is balanced between providing an inside access to local cooking which is in contrast to Khmer food prepared in restaurants. As such we balance between maintaining a local ambiance and truly local flavors while maintaining an exceptionally high standard of hygiene. A visit to the market is included. This was a great experience, which we did with 2 young kids and grandparents all of whom were captivated. Nuk was super helpful and enthusiastic and the food we made was delicious - i cant wait to make the curry paste and play around with more rice rolls. The trip to the market was a nice start to the day, educational for the kids and a chance to explore several vegetables, fruit and meats we'd not encountered before, even while living in Asia. It was relaxed, informal and fun and a proper local experience rather than doing a course at a hotel or professional kitchen.

A good way to learn about Cambodian food from a local. You start at the market to source all fresh ingredients and then make your dishes from scratch with Ratanak’s guidance. The food was delicious and incredibly filling. Our only suggestion is it’s a long class and it would be good to provide stools.

I’ve been loving the tastes of Khmer food, and this workshop helped me learn how to create them. Browsing the markets to start with, I learnt more about what I’d seen while walking through the markets by myself. The kitchen was spacious and well equipped, and the instruction clear. And the food!! Getting to share a meal of the courses we’d cooked was fantastic.
