More About This Experience

The music of Cambodia is derived from a mesh of cultural traditions dating back to the ancient Khmer Empire, India, China and the original indigenous tribes living in the area before the arrival of Indian and Chinese travelers. With rapid Westernization of popular music, Cambodian music has incorporated elements of music from around the world through globalization. As a result of the Khmer Rouge, the performing arts and folk culture of Cambodia had almost disappeared by 1979, however now people start paying more attention on preserving their long held musical traditions. Cambodian Xylophone, Roneat Ek (with the meaning 'the first xylophone') has been used since time immemorial in traditional and classical Khmer music. It is built in the shape of curved rectangle boat and comprises a wide range of wind, string, and percussion instrument used by both majority as well as the nation's ethnic minorities. Traditionally the Roneat Ek served as a musical background to rituals, court events and various performances such as drama, traditional dance, or shadow puppets. Join us how to make this traditional musical instrument, Roneat Ek, with a master host who has more than 20 years experience. There are many tools that we used during the workshop, and rest assured some of them you would have never seen before.
