More About This Experience

The coconut tree, a treasured tropical plant from the palm family, has a great cultural significance among the local people in Cambodia. Nearly all of the tree is used to create things of value. The tree trunk is used as wood for furnitures, the leaves to make farming hats and thatched roofs, the husk of the coconut as coir fiber to make door mats and mattresses, the flesh of the fruit as milk to be used in almost all Khmer dishes and desserts, the coconut water to cool you down on a hot tropical day, and the coconut shell, well the shell has a more ornamental role, to make beautifully carved keyrings and household ornaments. The coconut shells are sturdy, but more importantly they possess a beautiful grain pattern that make them so endearing to the eyes. Select a design of your choice, or create your own design on a piece of paper. This design is then pasted onto the shell that has been cut into half. Under the guidance of the instructor, you then begin to use interesting yet simple tools to carve out the outline of your design. And before you know it, you will be expertly carving tiny corners and curves of the keyring and finish the piece yourself. You end with a rustic polish finish. Make a gift, or make create a souvenir you can proudly call your own, this hands on course is a classic Cambodian must do.

My son of 13 and I took the coconut carving class. We went there in the morning while the rest of the family was still asleep. We made three keychains each, which turned out really nice. Part of the work is done by the craftsman, and there was always an English speaking lady with us. We both had a f... Read more
