More About This Experience

Oils have been a favorite of painters since their introduction during the Renaissance. Here you'll have a chance to learn how to paint by using oil, essential techniques, and step-by-step demonstrations on using oil paints. Emphasis is placed on choice of materials, depiction of light and shadow, painting techniques, basic color mixing and composition. The course provides you with a foundation for creative expression in oil painting. Please take your time out to try something new that you have never done before. From the time of the Greeks the chemistry of art and the chemistry of medicine were closely related and the recipes used for both were frequently written in the same books. These recipes were kept throughout the early centuries of Christianity by monks until their broader use outside of the monasteries in the middle ages. The use of drying oils is recorded among these recipes, listing walnut oil, poppy oil, hemp seed oil, castor oil, and linseed oil as varnishes to seal pictures and protect them from water. Adequately thickened, they became resinous in and of themselves and therefore worked as varnishes quite well. Later on, yellow pigments were added to the oil and it was spread over tin foil to mimic the look of gold leaf, but at less cost. And as early as the thirteenth century oil was used for painting details over tempera pictures. Cennini describes the preparation and use of oils in painting on all surfaces.

My sister and i had such a wonderful time doing the oil painting class with our teacher Somnang and our translator (We can't remember her name but she was incredible friendly and made the afternoon all that more special). After seeing many oil paintings in Siem Reap, we wanted to give it a go. Thanks to our teacher, we surprised our self with the art work we produced. If you have the afternoon free i would highly recommend taking this class or any class as everyone who worked there seemed very friendly. Thank you again to our teacher, who happened to be very handsome and our lovley translator who spoke perfect english and was also very funny. We both loved today and will be sure to tell our friends to visit. THANK YOU :)

Just returned from Backstreets very first oil painting course and couldn't be more satisfied with the results. With our very enthusiastic guide translating every instruction from our University trained painting instructor, we were able leave with more than presentable paintings. A great course, great souvenir and great memory. Strongly recommended.

From the very start the service was exceptional! We emailed them the night before we wanted to take the oil painting class, and were surprised to get a response a few hours later. The guide came to pick us up at our hostel, and stayed with us the whole time to translate. Both the translator and artist were university students. The class was private and very well run, everything was supplied and there were no extra expenses. Lots of flexibility too. An afternoon of smiles and learning, definitely recommended. It made for a great experience and great souvenir to take home!!
