More About This Experience

Used in all the big occasions in Cambodia, these quintessential drums are a staple in Cambodians' lives. While similar in style to the samba drums of South America and the African drums, it retains a very special SouthEast Asian flavour to it. Choose from a variety of drums to learn! From the pair of big war-drum sounding set to the long and slender standing drum and also the sling drums, you have a tough choice! Each one of them makes a different sound and are used for different occasions. Try it all and see which you like most!

I highly recommend any sort of experience that you can have in Cambodia with Backstreet Academy. Even if you have only a few days in Phnom Penh, I would recommend checking out their cultural experiences. I had some music lessons with very professional teachers, teaching Cambodian hand drum, percussion and xylophone. The staff at Backstreet were extremely accomodating and arranged the classes at short notice and I learned a lot about Cambodian music. Compared to other music schools in Phnom Penh, their prices are very good, and in my view you'll get a much more authentic experience of Cambodian traditions by going through them. The music school that provided the lessons also has a dance show on Friday and Saturday nights, which could be a good compliment to the lessons. Thanks Backstreet Academy!

If you love music this one is for you. I had a great experience with the host and the translator. We were a group of three and had a wonderful time. It was interesting to spend time with a local artist and learn something. I wouldn't hesitate to join another activity again. Very unique. It was a bit further than I thought it would be, so be sure you leave 20-30 minute to get there from the tourist/riverside area.

We took a drumming class organised by the folks of Backstreet Academy - lots of fun, indeed. Mr Hong started it by saying: "I am not a musician". But what a drummer he is! It is good to experience that drumming is not a piece of cake! We learned some stuff, good to see the backstreets, too - and it was fun to try the instruments in his workshop. The Backstreet Helper who picked us up - Vichai, correct? - was super friendly. All in all a nice way to experience Cambodia.
