More About This Experience
Besides fishing with nets, rods and traps, the ingenious Laotians have even devised their own version of the fishing spear, and its an amazingly powerful and precise mechanical fishing gun!
Made simply with a piece of sturdy wood with industrial-strength rubber bands, you can craft your own traditional Lao fishing gun for fishing in the shallows! Every arrow is armed with 4 blades so as to be able to snag a fish easier, just like a shotgun.
Try this out for yourself and have a home-made fishing gun to bring home! You will start this experience by crafting the wooden frame of the gun at the fisherman's workshop and practice your shooting.

Our family of 4 had a great afternoon learning from Master Phan on how to craft our own fishing guns. It was fascinating to see him show us the whole process from crafting then wooden stem to the little mechanical intricacies and eventually showing us how to fish in the clear river water. According to him the river isn't always clear so we were really lucky to be able to see the fish in the river and almost got one or two of the.
My children had a great time as well and it was nice for them to see how people lived in other parts of the world and learn some traditional skill and get in touch with nature, away from their ipads and phones. A great family outing and very well organised.

Great great great! Not only was Phan really friendly and welcoming all the time, his whole family and village was as well! We had a really enjoyable afternoon crafting the fish gun from a block of wood, some little metal tubes and bamboo sticks for arrows with little spikes. It was really amazing to see it work at the end, didn't even expect it to have much power but it pierced the apple we used for target practice like a shotgun!
We were lucky enough that the river was clear and we were able to have a great time roaming around to spot and try shooting the fish. Unfortunately it wasn't a great day and we didn't see lots of fishes but the gun was absolutely amazing for fishing. Can't wait to use this back home in the rivers near my home!
