More About This Experience
Bamboo is a key part of the Lao culture and is in almost every faucet of daily Lao life. From kitchen utensils like steaming baskets, cutlery to everyday items like chairs, containers and decorative pieces, bamboo is an essential item, made even more versatile by weaving. Since Angkorian days, people of the region have been weaving bamboo into all sorts of useful contraptions, with many methods, the single cross-weaving, double crossweaving and even triple cross weaving for creating items of different strengtha and look.
Try making a basket, a sitting mat or actually anything that you have seen at the night market! There's little our bamboo weavers consider a challenge, just make sure you have the space to bring it home! The slender round bamboo cylinder is especially interesting beccause it was used as a sticky rice container or soldiers in the past, while today it is used as a casing for foreigners to keep their purchased paintings. Check out the pictures in the gallery for other options you can try!

Mrs Vieng and her mother have been working on this craft for decades to say the least. Everyday they weave with their dexterous hands and sell their produce at the night market, but life has been a struggle with ba...
We travelled to a local weaving village where we chose to make quite complicated rice “tube” baskets. Vieng was very helpful with instructions and extremely competent as a basket maker. Some of her family members were preparing bamboo and ratan for weaving nearby. It seemed a very authentic experience. We took home a rice basket each which we contributed in the making of. A simpler weaving technique may have been a better option for us. It was a very enjoyable morning.

This was a great experience for our family and we have beautiful, hand-woven bamboo baskets to remember the activity. This is much harder than you would think but the host does a good job of helping when you need help and letting you work on your own. We even bought a few more items from them at the end of the class.

Yeng, our guide, was so friendly and made sure we were having a good time. We enjoyed going to a village a bit outside the city with nice scenery along the way. I made a basket and my friend made a tube to hold the paintings she'd bought in town.

It was great to experience how a family works and lives together. They were so welcoming and the translation did a great job to help me.
