More About This Experience
Bamboo is a key part of the Lao culture and is in almost every faucet of daily Lao life. From kitchen utensils like steaming baskets, cutlery to everyday items like chairs, containers and decorative pieces, bamboo is an essential item, made even more versatile by weaving. Since Angkorian days, people of the region have been weaving bamboo into all sorts of useful contraptions, with many methods, the single cross-weaving, double crossweaving and even triple cross weaving for creating items of different strengtha and look.
Try making a basket, a sitting mat or actually anything that you have seen at the night market! There's little our bamboo weavers consider a challenge, just make sure you have the space to bring it home! The slender round bamboo cylinder is especially interesting beccause it was used as a sticky rice container or soldiers in the past, while today it is used as a casing for foreigners to keep their purchased paintings. Check out the pictures in the gallery for other options you can try!
