More About This Experience
Live life like a Lao farmer for a day! See how sticky rice is grown and harvested, right from the beginning where you choose the seeds, plant them, plow the land to the harvesting and cooking of them. You will be able to take part in all 14 stages of it and be really hands-on diving right into the rice fields to experience this journey full blast!
Right after your rice farming experience, you will head to a local farmer's house to partake in their favorite activity - sticky rice wine brewing. Learn how to make sticky rice wine, build a fire and then enjoy a pot of it together with your host in a lovely courtyard. This communal activity is usually enjoyed during festivals and joyous occasions such as weddings. You'll also get a bottle of rice wine to bring home to drink to your hearts delight.
Finally, we will head to a bird traps workshop with a 68 year-old Hmong hunter. Bird traps were invented hundreds of years ago by Hmong people, to help sustain their nutrition from the plentiful game available and it also helped protect the agriculture from destruction. Not only are these tools can keep birds away from their sticky rice fields, they are cheap and easily handmade and the skill of making it has been passed down several generations. Made almost entirely with bamboo and activated mechanically, these ingenious works of engineering would leave you amazed!
In this bird traps course you'll be able to choose 1 out of 3 types of traps to learn and the instructor will guide you through each step on how to make them!
